Tuesday 20 November 2012   Danilo and his assistant from the rigging company 'Nordest' arrived about 5 pm and set about preparing lines to haul up to the top of the mast.  They inspected every part of the rigging and sprayed some '3M stuff' on all the terminals (important compression joints) to check for cracks in the rigging set up.  None were found and this was beyond the work we expected to be done.  We got them to concentrate on the stailess steel wires themselves to get an opinion about whether the rusting we experienced last year was 'fatal'.  The wires all passed inspection.  Given that Nordest could have got a full re-rig job paid out of warranty if they had failed the rigging we felt suitably reassured.    They then went on to check the tension of the various stays - too slack and the whole lot comes down (lots of Kg crashing to the deck and many £000's of mast, boom and wires in a heap) - too tight and the hull of the boat can be distorted.  The boats are of made of glassfibre and flex under load and are bent by the rigging tension.  If this is overdone the hull can bend so much that the rig goes slack and comes down.  So both too slack and too tight can have dramatic consequences.  I had been concerned that the tension was too high but was told that it was at the lower end of the acceptable tension range.  Overall, the rigging and the way it was set up and tuned by Demir Marine in Turkey was highly complimented (it must be said that not all the work done by the Turkish marine industry receives accolades).  The happy hours spent up in the rigging with stainless steel cleaner earlier this year in Portimao seem to have paid off.   We were so happy with the attitude and professionalism shown by the Nordest people (even before they gave us the answer we wanted to hear about the rigging) that we gave them a couple of other jobs.  What was most pleasing was that they responded promptly to quotation requests and came on the days they said they would (even if the times were variable) and did all work quietly and efficiently - and the prices were good by European standards (helped by there being no VAT in the Canaries).  We were also impressed by Tecklenborg, the wire supplier in Germany.  They stood by their warranty and arranged the rigging check with their Tenerife agent, even though the inspection was outside of the 12 month guarantee period and that there were reasons to believe that the cause of the problem might lie with the way the Turkish company stored the rigging wires and not with Tecklenborg themselves.  This is the way things should be but seldom are in the marine industry.   All in all a good result and we were happy to have this crucial matter resolved after all this time.   http://blog.mailasail.com/ile-jeudi/206

We have been having some problems with our watermaker and I finally gave up on trying to get help from back home and contacted Dessalator direct and got a quick response and the contacts for the local agent in Tenerife. I had no sooner got the email from Dessalator when I got an email from Danilo Origgi from Nordest saying a technician would be visiting my boat the next day -and he did.  He identified the problem within half an hour, had ordered the warranty parts from the factory and left the boat - no hassles. The parts arrived (including some spares I asked Danilo to source for me) within the week and the problem was resolved. I also stumbled across Nordest's downtown store and whilst only a small shop front it does hold a good range of products. Danilo also arranged for me to look at a decking product installed on their boat which was a bonus As I said good chandlery but great service (including excellent English)- if you need help in Tenerife look them up.

Besides visiting all these wonderful places we also have work to do – urgently: Our solar panels. From our shipyard we had received a contact address on Tenerife. We call after having had first contacts by mail. A couple of hours later Danilo Origgi of Nautica Nordest comes to see us. We explain to him the problem. He calls his mechanic/electrician and two days later he and José are coming to the boat. Without further explanations José starts working. He has his tools and the sun is shining! The result is clear: Insufficient power! He then starts systematically checking all the connections down to the regulator, which, he remarks casually, is not the most performing one. He promises to put everything in writing and 24h later we have his comments, translated by Danilo in English, in our mailbox. This is impressive and we pass on the information to Alubat. Now we have progressed quite substantially. Juppieh!   Within half a day the panels are replaced, our new regulator (an intelligent one) connected and – it works very well! Also the other minor important things, like replacement of the water flow counter and a 12V socket in the technical room (we just forgot it at the time of construction) are quickly installed to our fullest satisfaction. This is what we had expected at the famous centre of the circumnavigating community – in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, but found now here in Santa Cruz. Besides the less expensive berthing costs, there is, in our opinion, no need to go to Las Palmas: In summer one is living under the donkeys belly most of the time. The city has less charm than Santa Cruz. The services, as described above, cannot be matched and even the two ship chandlers, one belongs to Danilo Origgis family (Nautica Nordest) close to the harbour of Santa Cruz, with Ariel the competent shopkeeper, are well stocked and otherwise organize whatever is needed quickly. Of course, this has its price but also convenience. And everybody who has ordered through internet at unbeatable prices and had to hassle afterwards at customs or with airport officials or transport agents, only to find out, that it was not exactly what one had ordered, will agree that by using reliable and competent partners on the spot one is much better off even at a slightly higher price. And if we used these shops opportunistically only for things that we can not get through the internet, we would not have to wonder, when they disappear altogether. That is why, when we have a good feeling about a place, we also buy things there, even if we could get it through a reliable mail ordering organization like SVB in Germany
